Crowns

A crown is used to cover or “cap” a damaged or misshapen tooth. Besides strengthening a weakened tooth a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape and alignment.

Crowns can be made from porcelain, gold or a combination of both. A wide variety of modern all ceramic crowns are available that are highly aesthetic and natural looking and are the material of choice where appearances are most important.

All metal/gold crowns are the strongest and may be recommended for back teeth if excessive loads are being placed on them.

Crowns can also be made from porcelain bonded to a metal shell where strength and appearance are equally important.

Before a crown can be made the tooth (or teeth) must be reduced in size so that the crown can fit over it properly. An impression is taken and this is sent to an experienced technician for them to make the crown. An accurately fitting temporary crown is made to fit over the tooth until the final crown can be fitted.
